Riding for all map

Where no RDA group shows

If you want to ride, or your child does

This is a map, not a service, and nobody here can book a place. RDA groups offer riding, carriage driving and time with horses to disabled children and adults — find one under Find a group and ask it directly. Many have waiting lists.

In 52 of the 174 counties and unitary authorities of England and Wales, neither record shows an RDA group. 1,970,273 disabled people live in them. Before either sentence is quoted anywhere, read the next one.

What this does not mean

It does not mean disabled people there cannot ride. Riding schools, other charities and councils all offer activities with horses, and a rider can travel to a group outside their own council area. What it means is narrow: no group or approved centre on RDA’s public finder gives an address there, and no RDA charity records the area as one it works in. Both records can miss a group that is really there.

How presence was counted

  • An address — an RDA group on RDA’s finder gives one in the area: 98 areas.
  • The register — an RDA charity tells the Charity Commission it operates there: 104 areas.

Either one counts. A charity that records a whole region or country is not counted as present in any one area of it, because a charity that says it works everywhere says nothing about a particular place.

Recorded as working everywhere

Eight of the network’s charities tell the register only that they work throughout a region or nation, so the register places them nowhere and they count only where they give an address. Where one of them really covers an area, this page cannot see it:

  • Ceffyl Du RDA Driving Group — recorded as “Throughout Wales”
  • Chalkdown Group — recorded as “Throughout England”
  • East Liverpool RDA — recorded as “Throughout England”
  • Kentish Town City Farm — recorded as “Throughout London”
  • Knightsbridge Group — recorded as “Throughout London”
  • Nantwich & District RDA — recorded as “Throughout England”
  • Saddleworth RDA — recorded as “Throughout England And Wales”
  • Wellgrove RDA — recorded as “Throughout England”

Wales

An RDA group shows in 16 of Wales’s 22 areas, where 71.0% of Wales’s disabled people live. Wales is in every count here except the deprivation comparison, which is England’s own measure.

What else to know

  • The count of disabled people is from census day, 21 March 2021. It is the latest there is.
  • RDA’s finder is the list it publishes. RDA says “more than 450 RDA centres”; the finder lists 430, groups and approved riding schools together.
  • Area figures add up to slightly more or less than the national figure (10,444,761 against 10,444,776), because the statistics office adjusts small numbers to protect people’s privacy.
