Where the network does not show

In 34 of the 174 counties and unitary authorities of England and Wales, neither record shows Carers Trust’s network. 779,018 unpaid carers live in them. Before either sentence is quoted anywhere, read the next one.

What this does not mean

It does not mean no carer there gets support. Every council has a duty to assess carers, and many commission carer support from organisations outside this network. What it means is narrow: no service on Carers Trust’s public page gives an address there, and no network charity records the area as one it works in. Both records can miss a service that is really there.

How presence was counted

  • An address — a service on the page gives one in the area: 95 areas.
  • The register — a network charity tells the Charity Commission it operates there: 125 areas.

Either one counts. A charity that records a whole region — “throughout London” — is not counted as present in any one borough of it, because a charity that says it works everywhere says nothing about a particular place.

Every area where neither record shows the network

Largest number of carers first. The last column is a warning, not a correction: where a service’s own name mentions the area, the network may well work there even though neither record says so.

Wales

The network is present in 20 of Wales’s 22 areas, where 86.5% of Welsh unpaid carers live. Wales publishes its own deprivation index on its own scale, so Welsh areas are in every count here except the deprivation comparison.

What else to know

  • The count is from census day, 21 March 2021. It is the only complete count of carers there is, and it is five years old.
  • Scotland is not on this map. Carers Trust works there, and Scotland’s census is a separate product on its own scale.
  • Area figures add up to slightly less than the national figure (4,989,006 against 4,989,016), because the statistics office adjusts small numbers to protect people’s privacy.
