What this is built from

Public information. Every figure carries the source it came from.

The sources

SourceWhat it supplies

Office for National Statistics, Census 2021Unpaid carers by hours of care a week, for every county and unitary authority, under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
Charity Commission for England and WalesWhat each network charity is for, who for and how, where it says it operates, and its latest income, under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
Companies HouseLegal form and company type, under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local GovernmentThe English indices of deprivation 2025, under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
Office for National StatisticsWhich area a postcode is in, under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

What the register cannot say

113 of the 157 services belong to a charity on the register for England and Wales. Most of the rest are in Scotland, whose charities are registered by a different regulator; a few are run by councils or partnerships that are not charities at all.

What this will not do

  • It does not contact anybody. Nothing here has been sent to a carers’ service.
  • No telephone numbers, no personal email addresses and no full postcodes. Each service’s own website is here, because a website is a route to an organisation.
  • Nothing is scored and nobody is ranked. There is no good and bad carers’ service on this site, and no figure here is divided by any one charity’s carers.
  • No claim wider than what was counted. “Neither record shows the network here” is a fact about two records. “Carers here get no support” is a claim about the world, and nothing here is in a position to make it.

How current this is

Nothing here is typed in or kept up by hand. Every page is produced from the sources above, and carries the date it was made. The carer counts are from census day, 21 March 2021.
