What this is built from
Public information. Every figure on this site comes from information that is already published, and every one carries the source it came from. A number with no source is a rumour with good typography.
The sources
| Source | What it supplies |
|---|---|
| The membership list | Locality published member directory |
| Charity Commission for England and Wales | Charity Commission for England and Wales, register data extract, Open Government Licence v3.0 |
| Companies House | Companies House, Company Data Product, Open Government Licence v3.0 |
| Council ACV registers | Local authority Assets of Community Value registers |
| The organisation's own name | What the organisation's own name suggests it does. A HINT, NOT A RECORD. |
| Office for National Statistics | Local Authority Districts (December 2024), Open Government Licence v3.0 — which authorities hold the section 87 duty |
| legislation.gov.uk | The Localism Act 2011 and the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act 2026, including every commencement instrument made under it |
Two kinds of claim, kept apart
On the network pages a solid chip is something a register says, with a registration number on the card to check it against. A dashed chip is read off the organisation’s own name.
Both are useful. Only one is a fact. “Brockwell Park Community Partnership” almost certainly concerns a park — almost. Presenting 1,889 inferences with the same typography as 1,889 records is how somebody acts on one believing it was the other.
What this will not do
- It does not contact anybody. Not councils, not community groups, not anyone. Nothing on this site has been sent to a single organisation named on it.
- No full postcodes. The district — N1, BS5 — is on every organisation and every geographic filter runs off it. For a two-person unincorporated group the full postcode is very often somebody’s house, and the fact that others publish it does not make republishing it ours to do.
- No telephone numbers and no personal email addresses. A website is a route to an organisation; a phone number is a route to a person.
- Nothing is scored and nobody is ranked. No quality, no capacity, no maturity, no league table. A name tells you what something is called and a register tells you what it registered as. Neither tells you whether anybody is any good.
- Nothing unsigned is published. Every answer carries a named human who read it, and there is no way round that.
- No address is guessed. Not a postal one, not an email one. An organisation with nothing published is recorded as having nothing published.
What is missing, said plainly
179 of 1,889 organisations (9%) cannot be described at all. They are on neither national register and their names carry no information. That is not a gap in the sector; it is the limit of what public information can say about a very small organisation, and the fix is to ask the members.
Five council registers of about three hundred can be read by a machine, and one is complete enough to track whether protection is working. That is what the FOI campaign is for, and it may not work — councils can refuse, and some will. Refusals will be published here alongside the answers.
How current this is
Nothing on this site is typed in or kept up by hand. Every page is produced from the sources above, so a correction at the source arrives here rather than being copied across, and every page carries the date it was made.
