Where no community foundation shows
This is a map, not a funder, and nobody here can award a grant or take a gift. The community foundation for your area can — find it under Find a foundation, and its own website says what is open now.
In 65 of the 174 counties and unitary authorities of England and Wales, neither record shows a community foundation. 21,341 local charities name them on the register. Before either sentence is quoted anywhere, read the next one.
It does not mean groups there cannot get a local grant. Councils, other trusts and national funders all fund local groups, and a foundation can give beyond the areas it records. What it means is narrow: no foundation on UK Community Foundations’ list gives an address there, and no foundation’s register record names the area. Both records can miss a foundation that really gives there — the section below names the ones the register cannot place at all.
How presence was counted
- An address — a community foundation on UK Community Foundations’ list gives one in the area: 43 areas.
- The register — a foundation charity tells the Charity Commission it operates there: 103 areas.
Either one counts. A charity that records a whole region or country is not counted as present in any one area of it, because a charity that says it works everywhere says nothing about a particular place.
Recorded as working everywhere
Six of the network’s charities tell the register only that they work throughout a region or nation, so the register places them nowhere and they count only where they give an address. Where one of them really covers an area, this page cannot see it:
- Community Foundation Wales (all of Wales) — recorded as “Throughout England And Wales”
- Heart of Bucks Community Foundation — recorded as “Throughout England And Wales”
- Lincolnshire Community Foundation — recorded as “Throughout England”
- Point North (formerly County Durham Community Foundation) — recorded as “Scotland; Throughout England And Wales”
- The London Community Foundation — recorded as “Throughout England”
- Wiltshire and Swindon Community Foundation — recorded as “Throughout England And Wales”

Wales
A community foundation shows in 1 of Wales’s 22 areas, where 10.0% of Wales’s local charities work. Wales is in every count here except the deprivation comparison, which is England’s own measure.
What else to know
- The count of local charities is from the Charity Commission’s register as extracted on 22 September 2026. A charity naming two council areas is counted in each, so the areas add up to more than the 115,032 distinct charities.
