Where no Emmaus community shows

If you are homeless, or about to be

This is a map, not a service, and nobody here can find you somewhere to stay. The place to start is your council’s housing team. Each Emmaus community explains on its own page how people come to live there — find the nearest under Find a community.

In 105 of the 152 counties and unitary authorities of England, neither record shows an Emmaus community. 93,402 households found homeless were counted by the councils there. One of those areas has none of the households found homeless counted, and is not listed below. 13 more have no complete count of households found homeless at all, because a council in them sent no complete return; they are listed last, and in no total. Before either sentence is quoted anywhere, read the next one.

What this does not mean

It does not mean there is no help for homeless people there. Councils, hostels, day centres and many other charities work there, and neither record here would show them; an Emmaus community also takes people from well beyond its own council. What it means is narrow: no community on Emmaus UK’s finder gives an address there, and no community charity records the area as one it works in.

How presence was counted

  • An address — an Emmaus community on Emmaus UK’s finder gives one in the area: 28 areas.
  • The register — a community charity tells the Charity Commission it operates there: 41 areas.

Either one counts. A charity that records a whole region or country is not counted as present in any one area of it, because a charity that says it works everywhere says nothing about a particular place.

Recorded as working everywhere

Five of the network’s charities tell the register only that they work throughout a region or nation, so the register places them nowhere and they count only where they give an address. Where one of them really covers an area, this page cannot see it:

  • Emmaus Greenwich — recorded as “Throughout London”
  • Emmaus Lancashire — recorded as “Throughout England And Wales”
  • Emmaus Mossley — recorded as “Throughout England And Wales”
  • Emmaus North Staffs — recorded as “France; Throughout England And Wales”
  • Emmaus South Manchester — recorded as “Throughout England And Wales”

Wales

Emmaus UK’s finder also lists communities in Wales and Scotland. Both count homelessness under their own laws, so neither is in this map.

What else to know

  • The count of households found homeless comes from MHCLG statutory homelessness statistics, 2024-25 (table A1, households owed the relief duty). It is summed over each area’s own district councils, for England only.
  • England’s own total is larger than the areas here add up to (182,540 against 159,719): the statistics include an estimate for every council that sent no complete return, and this page counts no estimate.
